Still, the illustrations themselves are superb, or at least the ones by Hamilton Greene are, in the first two books and apparently the last. I have been searching for this poem for years because I memorized it for a speech contest as a 3rd grader. As I recall, the book looked a lot like the Dr. Meg and the Mystery of the Witch's Stairway, Meg and the Disappearing Diamonds, Meg and the Treasure Nobody Saw, etc. While both tales are science fiction, their well constructed plots show a certain rooting in the traditions of the cleverly plotted mystery thriller.

It's a Giant Little Golden Book published by Simon and Shulster. Perfect for: Kids who like historical fiction. Also I think it may have been a fair type thing,because someone's aunt or something wanted their cake to win. Warshawski (or Victoria, aka Vic) was one of the first tough female detectives and she inspired others to follow. She is also the author of The Western Mysteries. I can't remember the slicker story, but I'm absolutely certain that there is a story about putting peanut butter out for the birds in orange peels.
